ALEXIS M SYKES

Alexis Sykes is an Associate Attorney at O’Hara Law Firm. She practices insurance defense for individuals and insurers. She is admitted to practice law in Florida and in the federal district courts for the Middle, Northern, and Southern Districts of Florida.

Alexis is a native of Jacksonville, Florida, graduating high school from Paxon School for Advanced Studies cum laude with an International Baccalaureate diploma.  She graduated cum laude from Florida State University with a degree in Criminology in 2004.  Alexis earned her law degree from Howard University School of Law in 2007.  While at Howard, Alexis was Vice President of the Huver I. Brown Trial Advocacy Team and received the Book Award for Civil Procedure.

Alexis gained trial experience as a former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney.  She has tried over 90 jury trials. Her legal career spans the state of Florida to include criminal law practice in Jacksonville, Orlando, Miami, and Panama City. She was formerly a homicide prosecutor in both Jacksonville and Orlando.  She has served as the Chief of Violent Crimes in Orlando, a Felony Division Chief in Panama City, a Homicide Major Crimes Prosecutor in Jacksonville, and in the Career Criminal Unit in Miami. She also was a Visiting Professor at Florida A&M University College of Law where she taught Legal Research & Writing.

She received the Rookie of the Year Award for prosecutors in Jacksonville and a Certificate of Appreciation in Orlando due to her trial experience and dedication to the communities she served. She was recognized in the Top 100 Lawyers in Florida by the National Black Lawyers in 2024 & 2025. She is a member of the Jacksonville Bar Association, D.W. Perkins Bar Association, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

In her free time, Alexis loves going to the beach, cheering on the Jacksonville Jaguars, and being a dance mom. She is the mother of a beautiful daughter, Ava Grace, and the dog mom of rescue chihuahuas, Bella Marie & Beaux Mikel.
